My role as Business Intelligence Innovation Lead focussed on identifying new opportunities to enable the council to make data-driven decisions. Along with developing award-winning intelligence products such as the Council's Financial Vulnerability Index, I also implemented a new set of technical standards to ensure data pipelines were consistent, followed a similar structure and well documented.Shortly after starting this role, I took over responsibility of the council's GIS function and provided direct line manager support to a Senior GIS Specialist.

After 9 months in IT at Barnsley, I was promoted to Business Intelligence Technical Advisor in the Business Intelligence team. My role involved upholding the Council's Data Management Framework and ensuring data was created, maintained, presented and removed in the correct manner. I used my skills in FME and Python to create complex ETL routines and extract data to the corporate data warehouse before presenting information back in Power BI and GIS applications such as QGIS and StatMap Earthlight. A major part of my role was providing BI support to the Council's COVID-19 response. Here, I worked with colleagues across the council to develop volunteer support channels, a local test and trace solution, outbreak management reports and the deployment of an effective rapid test centre. Our response to COVID-19 was met with local and national praise. As well as demonstrating our reports to senior management teams within Barnsley, I also presented our products to national bodies such as NHS Digital, MHCLG and GeoPlace.

My role as ICT Technical Analyst involved providing first and second line support for users of internal GIS systems, maintaining and creating standards for the Council's spatial SQL data warehouse and migrating users from MapInfo Professsional to StatMap Earthlight.I also developed ETL procedures and automation of spatial data using FME and Python.

I temporarily performed some project work with the Ministry of Justice whilst travelling in New Zealand. As a content loader, I was involved with the migration of the Ministry’s corporate intranet platform from Plone to SilverStripe. My main responsibilities included:- Proof reading content to ensure it is of a publishable standard.- Loading and formatting content using the SilverStripe CMS.- Working with a variety of departments to get their content up to standard.- Creating links and navigation structures between web pages.My development and programming skills also assisted the Ministry in scraping the old Intranet platform for images, directly formatting content using HTML and bulk updating user’s Active Directory thumbnail photos.

My day to day duties involved assisting with maintenance of the Local Land and Property Gazetteer and Local Street Gazetteer. I also provided GIS-based mapping services for other areas of the council using MapInfo Professional and QGIS. I contributed heavily to the delivery of the Kirklees Publication Draft Local Plan, which consequently won an internal award for good use of data and intelligence. This project involved digitising and manipulating spatial information, finding topographic errors, converting between spatial filetypes and utilising techniques such as proximity analyses, proportional overlaps and viewshed analyses.After teaching myself how to program, I developed and introduced numerous procedures to aid with the management of the Council’s GIS data repository. These included processes to identify duplicate files, discover when an automated script had failed and a facility to track changes to files over time. I also developed a Spatial Metadata Crawler that performed a daily check of over 3,000 spatial layers. The system flagged up any anomalies, allowing the GIS team to fix errors quickly and efficiently. Each of these tools were developed using Python and greatly improved how the GIS team tracked changes to the GIS server.I used my communication and data management skills to provide first-line support to over 300 users of the organisations corporate web mapping platform. I also provided QGIS training sessions for groups and individuals, created user guides and technical documentation for GIS software and presented complex spatial data to staff members and senior managers from a variety of backgrounds.My role also involved using the Snap desktop software to design, deliver and analyse several key consultations throughout the Council.
