Responsible for leading and managing Maintenance and Facilities, New Product Development, In-Process Inspection, Drafting, Die/Machine Shop Operations, and Process, Equipment Development, and Operations Engineering. Total workforce was approximately 95 employees comprised of engineers, craftsmen, machinists, draftsmen, supervisors, and technicians. The hourly and salaried non-exempt employees are represented by the IBEW and AWSE unions, respectively. Annual budgets total approximately $12M for operations and $3.8M for capital investment and manufacturing development. The organization was integral to driving Continuous Improvement as demonstrated by the $1.5M+ cost savings it typically achieved. The organization was also integral to delivering products and services to the internal and external customers safely, on-quality, on-time, and on-budget.

Responsible for providing manufacturing operations with integrated, results-oriented leadership for building a strategic and technical partnership with the plant’s direct-material suppliers. Implemented a supplier qualification process while improving quality and reducing costs. Led the analysis of the plant’s supply chain risk relative to current and future business needs. Put in place the appropriate plans and actions to mitigate the risks identified in the analysis. Supported the plant with tool design and fabrication services regarding process improvement and new product development. Provided Industrial Engineering services for business case development, productivity and quality improvements, 6-Sigma, capacity analysis, etc. This was a start-up organization.

Responsible for concurrent engineering activities related to manufacturing, inspection, etc. for all grid strap, grid, and nozzle designs. Provided engineering support for New Product Development Programs while ensuring production profiles were met through process engineering support. Core team leader for the VVER440 grid new product/process implementation program and key manager of the Temelin 2 product/process development program. Led the outsourcing of non-essential Machine Shop activities.

Responsible for specifying, qualifying, programming, and proceduralizing the Wire EDM equipment and process. Included creation of material specifications and selection of primary and secondary carbide suppliers. Trained Tool Makers, Technicians, and a Technical Trainer on machine operation and programming. Final assembly responsibilities included: resolving customer concerns and questions; specifying equipment, tooling, processes, procedures, and production routings; implementing product and process improvements. Mentor / consultant for the stamping area personnel regarding production problems, quality issues, customer issues, etc.

Responsible for managing, optimizing, and troubleshooting the progressive die designs and stamping processes; yields, cycle times, disposition of non-conforming product, and costs; specifying equipment, tooling, processes, procedures, quality plans, and production routings; introducing new product and processes to the shop floor; performing process capability studies and process qualifications; partnering with Product Design to ensure product manufacturability; interfacing with tooling and stamping suppliers; resolving customer concerns and issues. Provide strategic and tactical direction for the stamping area and tool room via the Facility Investment Plan.

Provided technical support to Design Engineers for the VVER440 Top Nozzle Design, B&W strap and grid design characterization, and scoping of plastic modeling (prototype) equipment. 3-D Modeling and Finite Element Analysis for various strap designs. Generated various product test plans. Assisted the Core Component Senior Engineer to redesign the WABA Top End Plug to reduce the number of welds and to increase the penetration of the welds.
