NSERC research project in polar sea ice and climate change, mentored by Arctic Climate Variability Professor Bruno Tremblay and Antarctic Physical Oceanography Professor Carolina Dufour. The motivation for this project is the large loss of multi-year ice (MYI) in the last decades in the Arctic Ocean. Two factors contribute to this continued loss: 1) the melting of MYI in the Beaufort Gyre due to ocean heat transport through Bering Strait2) the lack of promotion of FYI to MYI due to summer meltingThe objective is to quantify the promotion of FYI to MYI and demotion of MYI to water by these processes using the Lagrangian Ice Tracking System (LITS) model, with satellite-derived sea ice drift from the Polar Pathfinder project.
