Software Engineer
Phd Candidate
Numerical method development of shock-tracking schemes for compressible flow simulations. Working within the Centre for Hypersonics.
Student Ambassador
As part of the student ambassador team I was involved in operating group tours around the campus, facilities and college accommodation. Off campus, this role involved driving around south-east Queensland presenting an 'Introduction to University' session at secondary schools. This role further developed my public speaking skills and group leading ability.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Worked with the UQ Composites Group on two separate projects, both within a small team (5 and 3 people) allowing for individual and team responsibilities. The first; an industry contract to create a compressed air gun capable of firing 5kg and 9kg steel projectiles, and hail stones, at 30 m/s and 60 m/s respectively. Also required was the capability to be easily altered to include testing for scenarios such as bird strikes on planes. This comprised of checking required pressure and strength levels, designing the system, sourcing components, and planning manufacture, testing and operation. The second; to design and create parametric models and animations of a concrete bridge using a revolutionary method of fibre-reinforced concrete, resulting in production of a lightweight 12 m bridge that can be installed in 3 days.
Software Engineer
* Achieved 190x speed-up of sparse, iterative linear solvers (Jacobi, Gauss-Seidel) compared to existing single-core implementations by designing and implementing novel algorithms on Nvidia GPUs using CUDA Fortran and MPI (see https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/on-demand/session/gtcfall20-a21516/)* Rapidly developed and implemented solver of the Navier-Stokes equations with conjugate heat transfer using the finite-volume method, accelerated using OpenMP on CPUs and CUDA C++ on GPUs.* Sped-up existing multi-core finite-volume electromagnetics code using algorithm changes, and then achieved ~20x speed-up by porting to run on Nvidia GPUs.
Software Engineer
Mechanical Engineering Student
Part of the Integrated Support and Logistics (ILS) team working within the Vigilare Support Systems Contract (VSSC) to update reliability and availability databases and reliability block diagrams.Working with VBA macros through Microsoft Access with data from Omega PS to update system information in PTC Windchill.Obtained and currently have a Baseline Security clearance for this position.
Mechanical Engineering Student
Refitted a fixed wing UAV with high quality and reliable electrical and mechanical components to extend the expected lifespan and increase reliability. Set-up autonomous flight hardware and software for the UAV to provide additional capabilities and create future work opportunities for the company. Fitted out two trainer UAVs with electrical hardware and autonomous flight software for testing purposes. Refitted a supporting ground control station for recording data and uploading flight plans to the UAVs.Wrote and performed bench, ground and flight testing, as well as updating flight, maintenance and operations manuals.Used a Makerbot 3D printer for prototyping parts and producing final parts, and soldered some electrical connections within the UAVs and ground control station.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Working with Professor David Auslander and the Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory to develop a 6U satellite for the purpose of higher precision measurements in LEO. This was also a collaboration with Autodesk and National Instruments to investigate the workflow process from 3D model to system model and finally to a control model, making use of Inventor, Modelica and Labview. As part of this project underwent training at the Berkeley Machine Shop to safely and effectively use mills, lathes, drill presses and other hand tools to machine and produce precision components for the satellite, typically accurate to +/- 0.003 inches. Designed flywheels and motor system for attitude control of satellite in three axes, and then machined components, assembled and assisted in testing.Achievements: • contributed to paper (draft) to be published late in 2016 • developed critical machine shop skills on standardised machinery applicable elsewhere • continued to improve Autodesk Inventor skills, including drawings specifically for purpose of machining • self-taught Autodesk Fusion360 by designing satellite components and others to develop applicable skills
Tutor
Tutored a range of subjects, including: • Maths B; • Physics; and, • Chemistryat high school level, and • Mathematical Foundations (MATH1050); • Engineering Design (ENGG1100); • Engineering Modelling and Problem Solving ENGG(1200); and, • Engineering Mechanics: Statics & Dynamics (ENGG1400) at university level. Worked with individuals and groups, and worked as a mentor sticking to weekly scheduled meetings to ensure that students requiring extra assistance were available to access it.
