Building customer/colleague/service authentication journeys for online, stores, offices, and the supply chain.10s millions of users, 100s millions of credentials, billions of requests

I lead teams of software engineers to create highly performant, scalable and resilient solutions for identity management at Tesco.We use a range of modern technologies, including Java (Spring Boot, Webflux, Vertx, Kafka, Kotlin, Cassandra), .Net (SQL Server), Docker, Kubernetes, Splunk and many others.I also lead our technology Graduate and Intern programmes, having responsibility for recruiting, developing and supporting around 30 early careers colleagues each year.

I created both short-run proof of concepts as well as production-ready applications that are deployed to thousands of colleagues or customers. I helped to keep track of technology trends and demonstrated the impact that they could have on the retail industry.In this role I used many different technologies across the full stack. Worked as part of an agile delivery team to produce a C# RESTful service that could provide location details of any product across our store estate. The Product Location service is highly scalable to service many internal consumers and is built on industry-standard technologies, such as ASP.NET Web API 2 and the Unity Application Block.

Within this two year rotational scheme I completed placements in Agile Software Development, Project Management, Infrastructure Delivery, and Innovation. These included:> Software Engineer, RFID (September 2014 - April 2015)I wrote and delivered embedded Java applications to be hosted on distributed RFID readers across our supply chain. The applications were responsible for providing real-time monitoring of stock position and status.> Infrastructure Delivery Manager, Middleware Systems (May 2014 - September 2014)I completed review of available messaging platforms and protocols (e.g. JMS, AMQP, MQTT). This led to the implementation of a dedicated messaging appliance, which I assisted with.> Project Manager, ArcGIS (March 2014 - May 2014)I worked onsite in Bangalore with our offshore development team to optimize project flow and ensure key deliverables were met.> Business Systems Analyst, ArcGIS (September 2013 - March 2014)I completed requirements gathering and analysis for an in-house Geographic Information System based on ArcGIS technology.

In this role I managed an online community of up to 100,000 members, including co-ordinating the recruiment, training, and organisation of the required support team of between 40 and 60 volunteers. This role included working with key stakeholders spread out across the globe, requiring excellent communication skills.Over the five years the role demonstrated the importance of developing excellent customer relations, and the significance of a well-motivated team in achieving this.

I was elected president of the Computing Society having previously served for a year as secretary. Within my term I organised a programme of weekly internal and external speakers, as well as looking after the society's financial requirements.To achieve this I successfully negotiated a £1,000 sponsorship from a major technology company – a first for the society.

I was elected to the executive committee with specific responsibility for the website and technical activities of the Junior Common Room (JCR), including its website and other online presences. The JCR organises all social, sporting and society student activities within college whilst representing student views to the University, with an annual budget of £200,000.In this role I participated in decision making on a broad spectrum of topics critical to student life at the weekly executive committee meetings, alongside my role-specific responsibilities which included successfully delivering a project to develop a replacement website with enhanced online services.The role required strong team skills to tackle larger issues, as well as individual initiative to resolve smaller problems as they arose.
