I have been working on the Financial Operations Unit within Loss Reserving for several years now. My current role as Data Engineer is recognition of a lot of hard work to become proficient with big data tools, and implementing solutions with them. I strive to make big data techniques accessible to our Loss Reserving Actuaries, by developing data pipelines to create richer datasets and a cloud platform where they can carry out analytic on these large and complex datasets. Here are some things that have been keeping me busy:* Migrate Loss Reserving databases to the cloud* Develop in-house Python packages to share with our department to streamline Loss Reserving activities* Worked with CAT Management Team to deploy event response website on EKS* Used AWS’s EKS & RDS to deploy a production grade Airflow server* Lead education efforts related to Git, Python/Jupyter, Spark, and other big data tools* Develop Confluence and Jira sites to guide and inform our team on cloud development* Ensure that Loss Reserving’s current and future data needs are met throughout system transformations* Participate in data science efforts to advance reserving methodologies

Working on the Financial Operations Unit Team within the Loss Reserving Department, I was a participant in a Change Leadership effort to adopt cloud technologies (AWS). I sat on the Enterprise Information Strategy Board to represent Enterprise Risk Managements’ data and analytics needs. Additionally, I began working on merging 10 years’ worth of weather data from radars up to policy and loss data using GeoSpark. Throughout this year I continued to develop big data skills for working with geospatial data, and it has lead to my current role as a Data Engineer.

Working in the Financial Operations Unit Team within the Loss Reserving Department, I developed and maintained our internal Essbase applications. I reduced the time that it takes to generate reserve diagnostic reports by several hour, saving the 100s of hours of computation time a year. I was a recipient of the 2019 All4OneAmFam Employee Recognition Award for my work on streamlining Loss Reserving’ reporting process.
