I was awarded an industrial placement with Eddie Weir in Architectural Design Partnership due to the Top First Year 1 Student prize. I worked alongside various parties such as NIHE grant officers, occupational therapists (OT) and dozens of clients. The main role I had was to design an adaption that met the OT recommendations that satisfy the needs of the occupant with reduced mobility. This involved a variety of disabled adaptation methods such as specifying ramped access to the property as well as an extension to provide a level access shower room and bedroom. In order to achieve these recommendations a well thought and thorough approach has to be made to ensure that the proposed meets all the demands from the parties within a sensible expense to NIHE. The drawings I created were to full working drawing standards with the Building Control NI approval rating remarkably high as well as exceptional admiration from contractors in terms of increasing the buildability of the project through the quality of detailing.

The main subject area of this job involved sustainability and I was hired to become the head of sustainability of JP Corry on behalf of Saint Gobain. My main role was to identify methods to make the whole of the JP Corry business more sustainable that also benefits the business in an economic manner. I researched into various sustainability methods such as the possibility of implementing a biomass boiler that provides heating to the entire head office on Springfield road. The other main role was to provide an explanation for the public relations department into what sustainability truly is and what is meant by being eco-friendly while portraying it in a suitable amount of detail for the public. My additional work included ensuring that all wood products have their sustainability certification up to date and properly documented.

I first started this placement as part of my work experience that needed to be completed while at Bangor Academy High School and also worked part time through school during holiday periods. I attended client meetings to create the clients brief and provide clear information onto the work that needs to be performed on behalf of the architect. I also carried out measured surveys of various buildings such as funeral parlours, residential properties and warehouses. I then designed basic working drawings to professional standard that involved drawing the floors plans and elevations of the buildings.
