OAR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit spay/ neuter clinic and cat shelter dedicated to decreasing the overpopulation of cats seen in this country. They offer low-income and feral cat colony services in an attempt to ease the burden of addressing cat overpopulation. They provide an example which other communities can adopt.As part of this team I optimized the flow of a high volume operating room, prepped cats for surgery and recorded the medical data relevant to each cat.

During a break from college I headed down to Louisiana to help a childhood friend open up the Covington, LA location of the The Chimes. While there I helped to train the the Front-of-House staff on technology, operations and human resources. I acted as the public face of the company when I was serving, and stepped in as temporary manager, to maintain customer satisfaction, when the restaurant was especially busy.

I took a year off from college to experience hands-on veterinary work as well as broaden the way I think and interpret the world. I chose to work in Kumasi, Ghana because I realized that what I would experience there would be unlike anything else I had ever done. I also believe that the more people who are willing to take a step into a world or culture that is alien to them, the easier it will be for the next person, and in time all countries may work together with more understanding and cohesion.While in Ghana I administered basic veterinary care and worked in a government diagnostics lab so that I would better understand the cultural differences in veterinary care between Ghana and the United States, the topic on which I based my Capstone. I also had the extreme pleasure of immersing myself in a culture extremely different than my own and traveling across a country that pulses to a different beat. The experience I value the most from my stay in Ghana, was learning that in their culture you take care of the sick, the homeless and the hungry because how you treat your neighbors is how you want them to treat you.
