I am a patent attorney that has drafted and prosecuted hundreds of patents over the course of my career. I leverage this extensive experience to the benefit of my clients as an Associate in the Intellectual Property (IP) and Technology Service Line at Shumaker’s Charleston office.Clients turn to me for well-informed opinions on matters such as infringement, Freedom to Operate, and validity concerns. During law school, I became interested in design patents, discovering how underutilized and undervalued they had become prior to Apple v. Samsung (one patent at issue, USD618,677, only claimed the black front face of the iPhone using broken or dashed lines to disclaim all other portions of the phone). Using this technique, I expanded my clients’ design patent portfolio by only claiming subtle nuances in the clients’ designs.Although I always dreamed of becoming a doctor, after a short two-and-a-half year stint as a paralegal, I realized that I could apply my science background to the study and practice of law. My undergraduate degree in Neuroscience allowed me to become a patent attorney, a profession of which I am proud and fortunate to practice. Even though I chose law school over medical school, please consider that “patent attorneys are the ‘plastic surgeons’ of attorneys. People do not go to them when they have a problem; they go to them when they want to make something better.” Patents, like all IP, are a valuable piece of property to own, and I revel in getting the broadest patents in the shortest amount of time for my clients.I am a member of several professional and community organizations, including the Georgia Lawyers for the Arts; ChIPS—Advancing Women in Tech, Law & Policy; Mensa—the High IQ Society; the Atlanta Bar Association; and the American Bar Association. When I am not fervently typing away on a patent application or office action response, I enjoy traveling the world and experiencing the location as the locals would. My other passions, including golf, skiing, and snowboarding, I was fortunate enough to learn early in life. My parents also instilled the importance of faith during my early childhood, and I continue to be a devoted Christian.
