  • Sumo Services Ltd (Incorporating Team Surveys Ltd)
    Measured Building Surveys Manager
Sumo Services Ltd (Incorporating Team Surveys Ltd) May 1997 - Sep 2012
Building Survey Manager – Whilst for the last ten years I have worked almost exclusively within the Building Survey market I have also gained lots of experience in other fields and continue to keep up to date with all aspects of the industry. In my early years with the company I was regularly used as a setting out engineer, being involved on the construction sites of the Asda store at Penryn and also the wind farm at Goonhilly. Since being with Team Surveys we have established strong links within two major fields of the construction industry, Pipelines (Mainly Gas and Water) and also Wind Farms. This has led to us carrying out topographical surveys throughout the British Isles for both types of project including the route survey for the Scotland to Northern Ireland pipeline. This required a corridor survey 100m wide over 89km across South West Scotland and a further 2km in Northern Ireland. It utilised GPS control and data collection along with conventional total stations, this led to us subsequently being involved with data collection for the as-built survey also.
  • Self Employed
    Surveyor And Setting Out Engineer
    Self Employed Jan 1992 - May 1997
Working for various Survey Companies and Developers producing surveys and overseeing construction sites as instructed. The first major project I undertook in a Self Employed capacity was a flood alleviation study in the Salisbury area for Merrett Surveys. I used a Geotronics Total Station in conjunction with a level and staff to produce regular sections of the five major rivers in and around Salisbury as part of a study for the Environment Agency. This included producing elevations of all structures spanning the waterways and overseeing two other locally employed members of staff. As indicated during this period I was also employed by smaller developers to carry out the setting out work on various projects mainly within Cornwall. By 1993 due to their workload I was working almost exclusively for Team Surveys and it was within this period that I also gained my H.N.C in Land Surveying.
  • Sw Surveys
    Senior Surveyor
    Sw Surveys May 1990 - Jan 1992
Surveyor in charge of topographical and building surveys throughout Cornwall, Devon and the South West of England. Surveys ranging from single building plots, up to an over one hundred acre survey for a retail development in South Wales. Up until my appointment S.W.Surveys had been a small independent practice whose workload had increased to the point that myself and an assistant were recruited. The survey methods in practice were very different to those with which I had become familiar and a re-education was required. There was only one total station, a Topcon GTS3B and all the site data was logged by hand. Subsequently all of the office processing was also done by hand including traverse calculations, plotting of site data and production of final negatives. Whilst in a technical aspect this seemed to represent a step backwards I feel my time at the company only served to broaden my skills and give a greater appreciation of the processes the latest technology was replacing.
  • Nationwide Surveys
    Surveying Assistant
    Nationwide Surveys Jun 1987 - May 1990
My grounding within the industry, I joined the company straight from school working as an assistant on numerous topographical projects throughout the U.K. whilst learning technique, technology and an unparalleled work ethic. The company used solely Leica equipment (Then Wild) to capture the site data and then processed electronically to produce paper plots which were then traced over by hand. I was also enrolled onto a City & Guilds Building Studies course at Camborne College, which covered all aspects of the construction industry and gave a brief insight into basic surveying. By my second year at the company I had begun taking new junior surveyors on site in the role of team leader and producing my own surveys, I also enrolled onto an O.N.C in Land Surveying at St.Austell College. This course provided a superb background and history of methodology to the practical experience I was gaining at work.
