One inspiration for Johnnie Max came while I was working with a researcher on an intervention program for preschoolers. Another came from my dad, Johnnie Max Jones, who spent years traveling and photographing the world. His photographs tell his life story. When he left his photographs to me, I wanted to use them to combine my life’s story with his, to give children the tools they need to tell their own stories.
