The Google Energy Access team works to make energy more affordable, accessible and clean. We support transformative renewable energy investments and develop businesses which promote access to energy, with a particular focus on emerging markets.

As the founding CEO, led the company from the pilot phase (2009) through the hiring of an experienced CEO (May 2014). During this time, oversaw the following activities for the company to reach a stage at which it is poised to expand:• Increased sales steadily, with modern electricity services now installed in more than 1000 homes and businesses in three regions in Tanzania• Built the team to its current size of 24, including 20 Tanzanian staff• Successfully transitioned the company--originally conceived as a battery distribution network (the "Netflix for batteries")--to focus on solar PV sales, distribution, financing, and service• Raised and managed a total of $1.5m in funding from the following sources:--Equity investors: GDF-Suez Rassembleurs d'Energies, Invested Development--Public sector funds: African Enterprise Challenge Fund, USAID Development Innovation Ventures, National Geographic Great Energy Challenge, National Geographic Terra Watt Prize--Fellowships and competitions: 2010 Echoing Green Fellowship, 2010 Pace Pitch Competition, 2009 Harvard Business School Business Plan Competition (Social Enterprise Track), 2009 KLI Africa Business Plan Competition, 2009 Yunus Challenge of the MIT IDEAS CompetitionAfter transitioning to a new CEO in May 2015, remained in Tanzania as President to ensure complete transfer of information and a smooth handoff to new leadership.

• Built team, developed business model, and entered business plan competitions for EGG-energy• As an affiliate of IntAct Labs (a startup working on microbial fuel cells for wastewater treatment), developed monitoring & evaluation system for fuel cell performance, designed and prototyped one product line• As a participant of the Fall 2008 Energy Ventures Special Seminar at the MIT Sloan School of Management, worked on business plan for geothermal heating and cooling in the Northeast US

At IBM Almaden Research Center and the IBM/Hitachi hard drive manufacturing facility in San Jose, California, worked full-time as a co-op student (May-December 2000), Summer Intern (June-August 2001), and Consultant (February-July 2003):• Explored spin-dependent tunneling for future read heads and optimized current giant magnetoresistive read heads for hard disk drives• Modeled read heads using Mathematica to determine methods for extracting sensor parameters from rotational field magnetometer measurementsPublished Research:• G.
