About Jamil R. Azzi Md, Phd

I am a specialist in kidney and pancreas transplant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In addition to providing medical care for transplant patients, my research focus at Harvard Medical School is to establish novel therapeutic strategies in transplantation and in type 1 diabetes and to develop non-invasive biomarkers for the detection of allograft rejection.A major focus of my research is to study cellular signaling pathways that determine the fate of the immune system. The goal is to use this knowledge to develop therapies to reeducate the immune system and prohibit it from attacking the pancreas in children with Type 1 diabetes and the allograft in transplant recipients.My laboratory is exploring multiple genomics and proteomics approaches to develop biomarkers that noninvasively detect rejection in kidney transplant recipients and measure the patient’s immune function.Another area of interest is to develop novel drug delivery techniques using nanotechnology with improved efficacy and reduced side effects. Using nanotechnology, we will potentially be able to deliver medications preferentially to specific areas of inflammation without affecting healthy tissues.
