CurrentSummary: Identify and advocate for the best interests of unaccompanied immigrant children who are placed in federal custody and engaged in legal deportation proceedings- Provide written and oral recommendations to government decision makers and other pertinent stakeholders regarding placement/custody, family reunification, conditions of release, immigration legal relief, and overall wellbeing of assigned children- Supervise Volunteer Child Advocates who assist with some cases… Show more Summary: Identify and advocate for the best interests of unaccompanied immigrant children who are placed in federal custody and engaged in legal deportation proceedings- Provide written and oral recommendations to government decision makers and other pertinent stakeholders regarding placement/custody, family reunification, conditions of release, immigration legal relief, and overall wellbeing of assigned children- Supervise Volunteer Child Advocates who assist with some cases by conducting weekly visits with a child and engaging in leisure activities while learning their social history, unique interests and specific needs- Serve directly as Staff Child Advocate on children's cases, visiting them in-person and virtually to discover their personal goals and challenges which inform the development of an individualized "best interest advocacy" plan- Accompany children during their immigration court hearings- Participate on an interdisciplinary team of attorneys and social workers to strategize ways to invoke the full rights and protections available under federal immigration law, domestic child welfare law and international human rights law- Consult with all parties involved in the child's welfare and gather information from shelter/program staff, foster parents, potential sponsors in the United States, family members in country of origin, pro bono attorneys, immigration enforcement officials, staff of the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement, etc.- Participate in the recruitment, training and retention of Volunteer Child Advocates -- presenting training sessions, attending volunteer engagement events and co-hosting information sessions- Build awareness and conduct outreach in the local community via educational presentations, professional networking and participation in coalitions/working groups Show less
