Mr. Newell served as a project manager for the installation of Smart Grid Technology at over 250 substations in Southern Florida. SEL 751 and 351 relays were installed to aid in outage data collection and prevention. He was charged with maintaining the schedule and budgetary aspects of the program.

While a senior transmission engineer at Nextera Energy, Mr. Newell was responsible for completing the detailed design on several complicated engineering projects, including: new lines, relocations, plant string buses, ADSS/OPGW replacements, and maintenance projects. The settings for these projects were as varied as their individual scopes, taking place in congested corridors, urban, as well as rural areas. One of his more notable efforts included serving as Lead Engineer on a green field power plant project that included multiple existing line relocations, 2 new 500kV lines, and 2 new 230kV lines. Jamil also became proficient in the use of PLSCADD, PLS-POLE, etc during this time. After serving as a senior design engineer, Mr. Newell moved over to the “unregulated” side of Nextera and became an Engineering Project Manager for Renewables. Jamil was responsible for the complete engineering and construction lifecycle of several wind farms and solar plants throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. These projects each included generation, collection, transmission, substation, and relay protection related aspects. One of his more notable efforts included the management of the engineering and construction of two 50MW solar thermal plants located near Madrigalejo, Spain; including their interconnection substation, a 20km 220kV overhead transmission line as well as a 22km 400kV line featuring both overhead and underground transmission sections through diverse terrain.
