Two-time Vinnova grant reciever within Social Innovation. The medical knowledge of interpreters in healthcare is today lacking in Sweden. This makes doctors feel uncertain that their patient has understood their medical status and how to treat it. At the same time, many of the newly arrived persons in Sweden are medically trained and can speak English.With that in focus, we argued that an innovative solution to this problem is to implement interpretation in health care with English as a base, performed by newly arrived people with medical education, as a complement to their ongoing Swedish education. The reasons for the project were several:- Swedish doctors very rarely use interpreters when they receive English-speaking patients- Today, it takes around 5 years, sometimes more, to have credentials tested for medically trained immigrants, which means that there is an obvious risk that people with medical knowledge will apply to other professions.- By letting newly arrived people with medical knowledge work part-time in healthcare, we help them fulfill a purpose in society and keep their motivation up. We also help them to establish a network within Swedish healthcare while working towards their Swedish medical credentials.- The hospitals receive a higher quality of interpretation, which leads to increased patient safety and more security in the work for the Swedish doctors / nurses.- We can improve integration by offering qualified workers qualified jobs- After the project, the hospitals can employ these people as doctors/nurses when they know the Swedish hospital system and Swedish hospital culture and in addition developed their professional Swedish.We conducted a pilot project together with Region Skåne at Helsingborg's Lasarett which was a huge success and confirmed all the aforementioned winnings
