I've written and illustrated more than forty books. I've also done hundreds of magazine articles. As a yeoman inkfish I've provided ghost writing, narrative script, storyboarding, research for other novelists, graphic design and ad copy. Through teaching and some acting background I'm comfortable presenting, lecturing. recording documentary voiceovers, narration and spoken-word books.For many years I've been a consultant and illustrator for exhibit design firms. For nine years I was associate art director at National Geographic Magazine. Later I was an editor for Muse, a copublication of Smithsonian and Cricket Magazines, reporting on the Smithsonian collections.I was a designer and visualizer with Design Lab, an industrial design firm in Providence, RI. I've done graphic recording at many business conferences. I'm essentially an explainer, a storyteller with words and images, an advocate for young minds, a resource for images, and a dinosaur holdout for simplicity and grace in illustration, design and typography.Specialties: Though I've written novels and mysteries, nonfiction is usually my medium. A few special niches are boating, history, energy, ecology, hiking, construction, biography and cartography. I'm fluent in most graphic programs, SketchUp, Quark, InDesign, &c. I have a background in maps, charts, and celestial navigation.
