Jan Bartoszek is an American choreographer. As the founder and artistic director of Hedwig Dances, she has choreographed over 70 dances that critics have described as “intelligent, accomplished, moving” (Chicago Tribune) and “poignantly human” (Chicago Reader). These dances have been presented in national performance venues and internationally in Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Honduras, and Mexico. Throughout her career, she has fostered a collaborative spirit; merging choreography, objects, media, text and music to create dances that resonate with emotional complexity and depth. Ms. Bartoszek has received a choreographic fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Illinois Arts Council, and a Ruth Page Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Dance Community. Today’s Chicago Woman Magazine featured her in “100 Women Making a Difference” in recognition of her accomplishments. She received a 2008 CDF Award to create a dance film; and a 2014 National Performance Network Creation Grant to create and tour "Trade Winds," a collaboration with Havana-based DanzAbierta. Her choreography credits include work in theater for Ping Chong, Steppenwolf, Northlight, Live Bait, and Court theaters; an opera with composer William Harper and director D.W. Moffett; and two dance films. She has choreographed four shows specifically designed for young audiences that have been performed in museums, cultural centers and schools across the Midwest. As a dancer, Ms.Bartoszek toured nationally and internationally with Ping Chong & Company and the Charlie Vernon Performance Company. She has served on the Advisory Board of the Arts & Business Council, the Chicago Dance Coalition Board, and dance panels for the Illinois Arts Council and the Oregon Arts Commission. She has taught dance at Northwestern University; the School of the Art Institute/Chicago; Roosevelt University; the University of Chicago; and, MoMing Dance & Arts Center. She has led four dance tours to Cuba (2012-2105) and one to Germany (2014).
