Jan Brooks has a decade of university teaching, three decades as a producing artist and designer, and has been professionally involved in the nonprofit sector as a board member, consultant or staff for over three decades. For the past twenty-one years, she has served the field of organized philanthropy, first as the Executive Director of a professional association of grantmakers (1998-2003), and then as a donor advisor and consultant to private foundations in the professional practices that inform effective grantmaking. She has also consulted with individuals in planning for trusts and foundations, the placement of archives and planned gifts. She currently serves on the board of a family foundation and while Executive Director of the New Mexico Association of Grantmakers, she served on the Education Resource Board of the National Center for Family Philanthropy. She also has extensive development experience raising money for organizations, political candidates, special projects and initiatives.Throughout much of her career, she has assisted nonprofits in planning and securing the funds needed to design and implement effective programs that have sometimes resulted in measurable social, cultural and economic change for their communities. As an object maker and studio artist/designer, her work has moved between a social practice of creative problem solving and team building and a private studio practice; the former being public, socially networked and collaborative, the later solitary and borrowing from historic influences and social issues.
