I am a creative researcher with very strong analytical skills and a passion for complex systems. I am convinced that science can only proceed through an active process of realistic falsification (Popper), and through an integrating of preclinical and clinical approaches. I have a strong track record on the mechanisms driving vascular disease (aneurysms, atherosclerosis) and ischemia reperfusion injury. It is my firm believe that the chronicity of these conditions reflect loss of normal regulatory pathways (viz. beyond a tipping point (Marten Scheffer, Anticipating critical transitions (Science. 2012; 338: 344-8)). My challenge is to identify molecular strategies that allow reestablishment of a physiologic context. With my medical background, creativity, and biological and epidemiological knowledge I am consider myself a translational researcher avant-la-lettre, who is able to built bridges between different disciplines and to enter new territories.I have extensive experience in conducting translational studies including initiation, conductance and guidance of phase II-III national and international clinical trials, development of tissue-biobanks as well performing in-vitro and in-vivo preclinical and clinical studies. My research is question is driven by the clinical observations and validation studies, as such I have established a broad group of collaborators (ranging from psychologists, epidemiologists and molecular biologists to physicists and informaticians). I consider myself an expert in the field of the molecular biology of human vascular pathophysiology.
