I began my career as a teacher of Chemistry and Science in Liverpool Secondary schools in 1980. In 1999, I moved to Liverpool John Moores University as a senior lecturer in Education and this career path led me to the post of Director of the School of Teacher Education in 2010, leading and managing all aspects of teacher training. The challenge of the role was to ensure high quality training and education to students on pre- and post- training programmes to develop highly effective practitioners. This was in addition to managing the ever-changing requirements of government and the OfSTED inspection regime. Successful inspection and student outcomes were achieved through good judgement, strong team leadership and the facilitation of change together with tenacity and persistence! Since 2016, I have held the position of Director of Strategic Partnership Initiatives for the University, a role where I identify and develop opportunities to collaborate internally and externally to benefit the students and staff as well as the communities of the Liverpool City Region. My success in this role has been achieved through a collaborative leadership style and an openness to others’ views and the ability to motivate and inspire. The Leadership Foundation in Higher Education’s Executive Leaders programme in 2016 provided positive 360 feedback around my leadership skills, including comments around my excellence at building and using networks to promote the University and the ability to spot opportunities, take the initiative and ultimately communicate a compelling narrative. I believe passionately in the life changing power of education and the right for all to high quality education and I am currently a community governor at a large Liverpool Secondary School located in a disadvantaged area. This appointment follows 3 years as a member on the School’s Interim Executive Board, working successfully to move the school from ‘Inadequate’ to ‘Requires Improvement’.
