Jan received WestEd's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.Jan was the co-founder of the Natick (MA) Education Foundation, an organization that funds grants and engages the public in dialogue about education in the community. Jan has been honored by the NEF for her contributions through the establishment of an award given annually to a Natick teacher as the "Jan Phlegar Inspiration in Education" Award. Jan has written and presented on issues of equity and at-risk students, teacher leadership, professional development, and using technology to support innovation. Prior to her career at WestEd, she served as a Program Director for Close Up, a researcher for the Booker T. Washington Papers Project, and as a middle and high school teacher.
