BiographyJan Snel is a partner in Baker McKenzie's Tax Practice Group in Amsterdam. He joined the Firm in 1995. In 2000 and 2001, he worked in the Palo Alto office where he focused on assisting US companies (of which many are high tech or e-commerce companies) in dealing with VAT and customs issues particularly in multinational contexts. He became a partner in the Amsterdam office in 2003. Jan is heading Baker & McKenzie"s Global Indirect Tax Group.Jan is an active participant of the OECD's BIAC (Business Industry Advisory Comittee) and the OECD's TAG (Technical Advisory Group).Jan is an active participant of the of Silicon Valley's DEG (Digital Economy Group).Jan has represented various clients with an online business in front of tax administrations in various countries around the world (e.g. Canada, Bahamas and Taiwan) while negotiating policy measures pertaining to online businesses. These measures may range from VAT to Transient Occupancy Taxes. Jan has further provided guidance and support to the Kingdom of Bhutan in respect of their contemplated tax reform.Jan is a leading authority in his field acknowledged by ratings in International Tax Review (Band 1) and Chambers (Band 4). Jan is further a frequent speaker on EU VAT and Customs issues at international tax planning programs, including the Tax Executives Institute and the Chicago Tax Club. Jan further teaches classes for advanced tax practitioners at the International Bureau for Fiscal Documentation.Practice focusHis practice focuses on international VAT and customs law, specifically on behalf of online businesses, high-tech and e-commerce companies in general as well as companies in the medical industry.
