About Jan Thiart
I am a physicist-turned-backend Java engineer who dabbled with frontend tech in the past. I am deeply familiar with database-heavy, time-critical web applications at any scale with a particular focus on building well-performing data warehouses from the ground up. CI/CD is integral to my work.I aim to build efficient, easy-to-understand systems that are maintainable and can be taken over by other developers without weeks of training or volumes of documentation. I like keeping a level head and an eye for detail even when an application grows to an enormous size. Building features that bring demonstrable value to the users without sacrificing simplicity and reliability is very important to me.While backend enterprise Java applications are my speciality, anything relatively close to that is cool, but learning new tricks is even better, with particular focus on:* Java (microservice architecture to monolith with millions of lines of code)* Apache Kafka (focus: migrations, Kafka Connect)* Spring Boot (see Java)* GitOps (GitHub, Gitlab, Jenkins, Tekton, E2E test design)* RDBMS, SQLOutisde work, I'm building a 2D ARPG in Godot with a friend as well as providing mod tooling for a video game community written in C++.The remainder of my free time is mostly devoted to my dog, Ori (a very good boy, of course).
