Starting as a research scientist in 1980, my 29 year career with Shell included a range of research, technology and business management positions in the Netherlands, the UK and the USA. In 2006 I was appointed as Shell’s first Group Chief Technology officer with responsibility for the development of the company’s technology strategy, and its implementation through a technical organisation of 30,000 with an annual R&D budget of more than $1 billion. In this role I was also responsible for the management of a global external network of knowledge and technology providers and for the early identification of breakthrough technologies of relevance to Shell. My strong reputation in Shell is built on the following personal characteristics: • Independent and strategic thinker with global outlook;• Experienced business and technology manager who has worked extensively with executive teams and with supervisory boards of large chemical companies;• Ability to align people and organizations through building trust with key internal and external stakeholders and networking at all relevant levels; • Extensive hands-on experience with the introduction of new products and processes to the energy and petrochemical industry; Having retired from Shell per 1/1/2010 , I I am currently active as an independent consultant providing consultancy services to companies active in Oil&Gas, Renewable Energy and Chemicals as well as to venture capital and private equity firms. Main themes are assessment of business& technology trends, development and implementation of technology strategies, introduction of Technology& Innovation management processes, and (re-)alignment of R&D organizations. Through participation in advisory committees and project teams, support is given to the development and implementation of national Science and Innovation initiatives (Saudi Arabia, Netherlands, Switzerland).
