I work with seismic data (which is often considered big data since data-sets are usually several TB large) for eight years beginning in the Bachelor program of my studies as student assistant. I picked up programming at the same time, starting with FORTRAN, C, C++ and Matlab moving mostly to Python in recent years as I picked up a strong interest for data science, in particular deep learning methods. After I graduated with an M.Sc. I started my PhD where I worked on seismic data, incorporating numerical function optimization and Inversion to image subsurface structures using seismic waves. After PhD graduation I continued working on seismic inversion, including deep learning methods. Currently, I extract information from the seismic data using unsupervised convolutional autoencoder combined with clustering methods, accelerating the interpretation process. Furthermore, I apply deep learning techniques for denoising purposes and decision making in the processing workflow. These results could convince my colleagues to ensure deep learning techniques will become a central focus in our institute for the years to come.
