About Janae Davis Ph.D.
I am Director of Conservation with American Rivers, an organization that protects and restores rivers and conserves clean water. I’m passionate about building effective and evidence-based approaches that promote collaboration across social differences. My vision is to create systemic and organizational change and sets the bar for what inclusive and just environmentalism should look like.Professionally, I specialize in critical issues surrounding equity and environmentalism and for eight years, I have intensely studied the pitfalls and solutions to the equity problems that impede effective and equitable conservation. My dissertation explored how the dismal track record of conservation-development programs implemented in a low-income, Indigenous community in South Africa can be largely attributed to the ways that the programs have actually served to re-entrench racial inequities in the landscape and conservation ideology. I am summarizing my findings and offering practical recommendations to build just conservation-development programming to share with community members and their NGO partners. My Master’s thesis explored how wilderness management at Congaree National Park alienated local African American fishers and how park management could develop outreach programs that re-connect fishers to the Congaree River while fulfilling its conservation mandates. Through my role at American Rivers, I am working with park staff to build equitable relationships with the African American community.I have also worked with management, staff, and donors at several major conservation organizations in research and collaborative projects aimed at creating internal structures, marketing materials, and outreach programming that support partnerships across political, racial, and cultural barriers.Key Strengths: Strategic Leadership | Diversity | Equity | Qualitative Data Analysis | Progressive CollaborationIf you would like to connect or know more about my professional story, please send me an InMail message or email me at janae_davis@ymail.com
