Dr. Jan Altman is an educational developer and consultant who specializes in DEIB education, training, and program development. As a consultant to VCU Division of Inclusive Excellence, faculty affiliate in the VCU School of Education and a psychologist, she continues her scholarly work. Dr. Altman led Virginia Commonwealth University in the development and implementation of DEI education for 7 years. In 2019 she launched IExcel Education, a new initiative at VCU offering over 25 DEI courses. In 2016 she directed a large train-the-trainer program, Building Inclusive Communities, to train and certify a team of 25 diversity workshop facilitators. Together they helped to build diversity and inclusion skills among VCU faculty and staff and students.Prior to her positions in Inclusive Excellence, Dr Altman served in many university counseling center roles as a licensed psychologist, providing therapy to students and supervising/training grad students in Counseling Psychology and Social Work. She also established the Safe Zone Program at VCU. These experiences continue to inform her work.
