About Janani Eswar

I work toward the alleviation of poverty. I'm a Social Entrepreneur, Educator and Facilitator and enjoy working in a complex world and enabling the people around me towards health and happiness. I am a director of The Fractal Entrepreneurship Foundation. We create powerful B2C social ventures that work towards sustainability by incubating people who would not have thought they could become entrepreneurs. We enable them to lift many others out of poverty by helping the less-abled do what only experts can do. We use an innovative incubation process and innovation process to achieve this.I enjoy the challenge of working with people to empower them to be leaders. I bring my skills and experience of 10 years as an educator to this project.I am also a Co-Founder of Sampoorna Ahara, A health Kitchen in India. We have innovated to find the best ways to cook food that heals. I was a young mother of a 2 month old when I started the bakery here and while there is now a wonderful team to manage it, I am privileged to be part of the impact that Sampoorna Ahara is making in enabling people to eat healthy and heal multiple lifestyle diseases. At the age of 12, I stepped out of mainstream education and started homeschooling with my family. Not having the limitations that curriculums and school systems usually have enabled me to grow and explore much quicker and in areas that I was actually curious about. At 16, I started working to connect children to nature.Once again, I found myself making my own trail since there wasn't really a college degree in this field. My work with GRIN (Growing in Nature) lead me to make impacts in international conversations, and conferences, and be featured in Richard Louv's book, "Our Wild Calling"Over the next 12 years, I have worked with over 60 different educational institutions. These institutions catered to various socio-economic classes, ages and locations, including the University of Minnesota and Azim Premji University. I have assisted multiple institutions in building curriculum and pedagogy to explore and build our human relationship with nature. I work through the pedagogies of Project Based Learning, experiential education, Play and Interdisciplinary learning.I was part of the team to set up the core curriculum and pedagogy of the first year of the undergraduate program at Atria University. The University is centred on Project Based Learning and building students' abilities to learn how to learn.

Listed skills include Photography, Art, Botany, Communication, and 21 others.

Visiting Faculty - Creative Expressions

Bangalore, India

I developed, designed, delivered and assessed a creative expressions course for undergraduates titled, "Nature, Art and Human Beings." This was done twice, once with a class of 16 students and once with 20.Through embodied learning, we explored Ecopsychology, playing in nature, sensory practices, naturalist studies, theatre, and personal as well as societal level relationships with other-than-human beings. Each semester ended with a Mela or exhibition of a student projects. Each project was chosen by the individual students and represented a personal journey or enquiry for them. For example, we filled an entire wall with sketched of movement in nature, or created a piece of music inspired by alone time in nature. We even crafted a clay vessel, created a fire and made soup on it for everyone to taste. The course was designed to try and communicate these statements to the participants: 1. It is fundamental and peacemaking to acknowledge interconnection with more-than-human beings. 2. Your body, mind and self can learn, experience and celebrate these relationships in a beautiful, integrated manner.3. You are invited to share these experiences. They are cherished.4. Languages can be found to express these experiences - art and creativity fill this role when words become insufficient or restrictive.

Green Connect Leader

Bangalore, India

As Green Connect Leader in ArtyPlantz, I led a team of people to plan and execute events, presentations, and long-term projects aimed at connecting People to Plants. I was an integral part of the team that setup and ran Neralu - Bangalore's first tree festival. During this festival I created three audio walks (translated into two languages) that was listened to by over 8000 people from across the globe all of them finding it connected them deeply to the trees they were listening to. I also set up a monthly gathering at a local park where people came together to share their connection to Nature with each other. I spent this time exploring what nature connection does to all of us and where I am needed the most. My efforts reached an interesting conclusion when I realised that this next generation of Indians is growing up without anyone allowing them to explore and connect to Nature on thier own terms. This is where my project morphed into Growing in Nature (GRIN) which is now incubated on ArtyPlantz's platform.

Jan 2013 - Dec 2015

Naturalist Intern

I study all I can about the plants we deal with and pitch in whenever a project needs someone who knows about the plants. This could mean writing, making a manual on how to grow them, designing games based on them, photographing them or recently even video graphing.
