I studied landscape architecture because I want to do work that makes a positive difference in people's lives. The field brings together interests I have in ecology, sociology and culture, and creativity in a way that will allow me to work for a more sustainable human civilization. In my capstone master's project, I co-developed a master plan for green alley networks throughout 19-square-miles of South Los Angeles. The plan focuses on utilizing alleys, streets, and vacant lots to improve: pedestrian and bicyclists connections, usable open space, stormwater management, and greening and cooling of the urban environment.

Assisted with outreach, community workshop facilitation, research, grant proposal preparation, and design graphic and material development for park projects in underserved communities in Los Angeles.

Developed and conducted post-occupancy evaluations for past EPT projects; added to and organized the firm's "Green Library", images and resources on sustainable landscape architecture practices.

Over roughly nine months, I learned from the Carkeek Park Naturalist and the Carkeek Park Forest Steward best management practices for removing invasive plants, planting native species, and leading volunteers in doing such work within an urban forest. With a partner, I then devised a plan for restoring the native canopy, understory, and ground cover at a compromised site within Carkeek Park. With the knowledge I gained through the Master Forester program, I continued my involvement at Carkeek park at least once a month during volunteer work parties.
