•The effect of nuclear quantum dynamics on clay systems was studied using classical and path integral molecular dynamics.•Kaolinite and aqueous kaolinite clay minerals were analyzed by molecular dynamics simulation and ab initio path integral molecular dynamics simulation to evaluate the significance of nuclear quantum effects. •The study showed that accounting for the quantum-mechanical nature of nuclei is crucial, and different types of hydrogen bonds have a substantial impact on the properties of clay-water interface.
