The Commission aims amongst other to promote sustainable mountain regions development and rewards innovative initiatives in adventure tourism and mountain conservation. Between 2004 and 2008, Jan Cools was appointed as Commissioner of the then newly setup (in 2003) accreditation organisation for higher education for the Netherlands and Flanders/Belgium, abbreviated as NVAO. NVAO is a bi-national institute, directly under supervision of the Ministers of Education of the Netherlands and Flanders/Belgium. He was appointed as one of the 6 representatives of the Flemish Government.
