Dr. Jan Cools has more than 20 years of experience in providing scientific and policy-relevant advice to a number of international organisations, including the European Commission (DG Environment, DG Climate Action, DG Research, DG Agri), the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the United Nations (UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO and UNDRR).He is primarily focusing on inter-disciplinary projects related to climate change adaptation and integrated environmental management for a wide range of topics, of which the most important are water and land management in urban and rural context, nature-based solutions, climate change adaptation and societal transformations. His projects typically integrate natural/engineering sciences with governance and social/economic sciences. Currently, he is the Research Coordinator of the “Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development” at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. Jan Cools is furthermore the scientific coordinator of the ongoing project TransformAr, an EU Horizon2020 Green Deal project, on transformational adaptation (running from 2021-2025). In addition, he is work package leader in 'Nature Smart Cities' (Interreg2Seas) and 'TURQUOISE' (FWO-SBO). In Nature Smart Cities, he leads the development of a business model for the greening of cities. In TURQUOISE, he is responsible for the development of a decision-support framework for using blue-green measures for drought management.Previously, he has been the coordinator of EU research projects WETwin (wetland management), AFROMAISON (natural resources management), FREEMAN (flood resilience), FLAFOM (flash flood management) and was involved as work package leader in Twin2Go (adaptive governance), EnviroGrids (data interoperability) and Soilcare (soil management). He also led the evaluation of the EU Member States' Flood Risk Management Plans (FRMPs) as ordered by the European Commission, and provided technical support on the implementation of a range of EU water-related legislation, the EU Adaptation Strategy and the National Recovery and Resilience Plans (NRRPs). He is the founder of SDSN Belgium.Jan holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences (University of Geneva, Switzerland) (on the use of scientific data for River Basin Management), and 2 MSc degrees from KULeuven (Leuven, Belgium): Water Resources Engineering and Anthropology. Former affiliations are Milieu Ltd (European policy consultancy), Antea Group (engineering consultancy) and the Free University of Brussels (Department of Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering).
