The mission that I've decided to accept is to spread awareness of what life is like for a teen after a life-changing emotional loss. I'll be sharing my experience, then offering ideas on how other families can work together and have a better experience.My elevator pitch is: "Most people have heard the old adage that 'Kids bounce back.' It looks that way, but is not correct." Teens are not physically ready to react to life-changing emotional loss. That process must wait until their adult years, when their brains have matured. By that time, though, the teen has grown up, left the nest, and has started life. Unfortunately, unconscious and automatic blame reactions happen in the teen's mind. If the family follows the usual tradition of "life goes on," the family's changed communication patterns interfere with the teen's normal social and emotional development. Codependence is a frequent result of attempts to fix the impossible. Self-destructive behaviors and habits can form as a result of unconscious self-blame. Blame usually leads to punishment. When the delayed reactions finally start, they are disconnected in time from the original event. The reactions are unrelated to any current activities. There are positive, proactive steps the adults can do in the meantime while the teen is still at home. My job is to spread the word and point the way so families can know about and find the needed help to move forward. The grief process can be seen as a process to be managed, instead of a force that destroys the surviving family members.

From 1990 until 1997, I read a total of 35 books in the search for the answer to a question: Why was I consistently attracted to men with problems - mostly alcohol - when I didn't grow up around it? The answer turned out to be that my adolesence was a prime environment for me to become a co-dependent. I was then able to finish the first book: Mama's In Heaven -- But You Can Manage. "Forewarned is forearmed." After post-traumatic stress started and continued for several months, I wrote the second book: Teen Grief's Delayed Reactions -- Little Gracie's Experience. Post-traumatic stress has part of my life for 20 years now. It is not fun. At the same time, if someone doesn't know what it is or that it could happen, it can make you think that you're crazy. Why else would someone react to something that happened years ago? In 2013, I started a book called The Thief Called Co-Dependence. It discusses how a lifetime of being an active co-dependent (spending all your money to fix someone else) leaves a person with little money, low self-esteem and chronic frustration.

Background: The Office of Administrative Hearings ("OAH") holds and administers DUI hearings for the WV Division of Motor Vehicles. It was created from DMV's Legal Unit, where I did docketing. The docketing staff at DMV Legal were transferred to OAH. This meant that I was cross-trained in the docketing procedures and associated customer service calls.As OAH Receptionist, I answered the phone, transferred calls and greeted callers. I helped the Docketing section by merging and sending letters as needed. Mostly, though, I did similar customer service as I did as a docket clerk/"hearing coordinator." I considered my main task to help respondents find their way through the hearing system, as opposed to punishing them. Because of that, along with my professional, friendly phone manner, I was often told that I was the nicest person they'd encountered in the process. I also spoke with and gave service to attorneys, legal staff and officers with docketing questions.I received two unsolicited commendation letters: One from a Trooper Supervisor of the West Virginia State Police, and an attorney.

Worked for specific Hearing Examiners as assigned: Set hearings in a timely fashion, entered hearing information into the DOT database ("IRMA");sent hearing notice and continuance notice letters as needed. Sent faxes to parties regarding continued hearings, granted and denied hearing requests and continuances according to rules. Called attorney offices to coordinate rescheduled hearing dates. According to (2008) rules, determined timeliness of hearing requests, which officers were requested, which agencies wanted notice; completed subpoenas to officers; sent subpoenas for medical records according to HIPPA/privacy rules.Customer service: Contact with drivers, attorneys and officers; answering questions within guidelines; regular contact with file room personnel when requesting and returning files (DUI-Records); office support for Hearing Examiners, most of whom lived out of town (Charleston). Sent form letters to deny hearings and continuances, processed withdrawn hearing requests, i.e., notified parties, entered change of driver license status in the computer, and sent acknowledgement - revocation letters in follow-through. File maintenance and tracking; worked with other coordinators when counties were shared with other hearing examiners; adjusted to frequent procedure changes that were made as needed (2008 to 2010)
