The remit encompassed the promotion of RLSD, its products and services, with a technical bias including personal presentations to clients/engineers. It also involved the provision of Technical Support - internally to the drawing office, sales, estimating, and construction departments, - and externally to structural engineers, architects, steel fabricators and general contractors. Technical support included the production of steel deck composite slab calculations, advice on suitability of RLSD products for specified load/span conditions and advice on associated construction details. The role also encompassed ongoing development and improvement of design software for internal and external use. The role involved the promotion of the BourneDeck long span steel deck composite floor system for use in steel framed car parks. The BourneDeck system was complementary to the Bourne Parking standard precast concrete solution. The role was primarily a sales role and as such included identification of potential project leads and creation of marketing literature, but also incorporated design, estimating, preparation of quotations and personal presentations to clients/engineers. In addition, my role required close liaison with the German manufacturers of the system to ensure that the technical parameters suited the UK market.

The key activities of the role are provided below:• Offer a design service with regard to WBC products so that they can be used correctly and efficiently.• Assist the Floor Deck Engineer with testing of Ward’s first bespoke composite floor design software.• Assess site issues in order to determine the cause and appropriate corrective action.• Identify product issues, trace back to source and recommend remedial action in order to ensure customer satisfaction.• Evaluate all technical aspects of WBC products to ensure fitness for purpose.• Research topics, prepare and present internal training sessions to keep Ward Building Components staff informed.• Generate product sales by advising on the most economic and effective solution to the project requirements.

This role involved responding to enquiries regarding technical aspects of decking design and composite floor construction from consulting engineers, architects, main contractors and structural steel fabricators. In order to achieve this, the following duties were undertaken:• Prepare structural design calculations at contract stage with the aid of a bespoke computer program, or by hand where the conditions are beyond the scope of the software, eg, for 2 hour fire rated slabs, in accordance with the relevant SCI publication, and for assessment of non-uniformly distributed loads, ie, point and line loads.• Advise draughtsmen of job specific requirement, ie, deck gauge, temporary propping requirements, non-standard drawing notes, size and spacing of shear studs, non-typical temporary fixings, etc.• Undertake detailing of specific contracts and/or make revisions to drawings detailed by others.• Assist the Estimating Department with any design related issues which may affect contract pricing and deal with design/fixing queries from site supervisors/operatives.• Liaise with internal and external contacts regarding contract programme requirements; current developments, test data and reports, derived deck data; development and assessment of full-scale structural floor slab fire tests; potential improvements of design program capabilities.• Undertake librarian duties and assimilate, collate and format required information for company technical literature and liaise with marketing/print company.• Assist in the design and development of Quality Assurance procedures for the Design Department and Drawing Office with the aid of a QA consultancy.• Attend in-house technical committee meetings, site/design meetings to resolve issues, co-ordination meetings to establish priority work and identify issues relevant to design/detailing.
