Professor Jane Bourke leads the Respiratory Pharmacology Group in the Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) at Monash University. Jane was awarded Fellow of the American Thoracic Society (ATS, 2020) and Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ, 2019) in recognition of her contributions to respiratory science.Jane has an international research reputation for innovative research across three major themes: (1) novel bronchodilators and antifibrotics for lung disease including asthma, pulmonary hypertension and IPF; (2) repurposing pirfenidone for COPD exacerbations and (3) early detection and drug screening in silicosis. She was the first researcher to establish the novel precision cut lung slice (PCLS) technique in Australia and has pioneered its integration into translational studies across these research areas. Jane’s unique research expertise and multidisciplinary productive collaborations have led to competitive funding for research, commercial contracts and equipment grants (totalling >$5M including $2.87M since 2020), publications with impact (>60 publications), and support for HDR students (8 PhD/5 Masters/30 Hons completions). Notable external recognition of Jane’s research includes regular invitations to present at national and international conferences (TSANZ; ATS; European Respiratory Society (ERS)). She also contributes to research development and policy through ATS Official Document Development and as member of the Lung Foundation of Australia Occupation Lung Disease Network Steering Committee. Jane and her team have published their research in specialist respiratory and pharmacology journals (Thorax, European Respiratory Journal, American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology (AJRCMB), American Journal of Physiology, Respiratory Research, Trends in Pharmacological Sciences, British Journal of Pharmacology) and multidisciplinary journals (Nature Communications, Clinical Science). She is also an Editorial Board member for the journals Respirology, Fibrosis and AJRCMB.Jane is the current Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee of the Biomedicine Discovery Institute at Monash, and recently contributed to the Australian Association of Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) Panel on Sex and Gender Equity in Medical Research. As a long-standing Committee Member of Graduate Women Victoria (GWV), she plays an active role in promoting equality of educational opportunity for women experiencing disadvantage, through advocacy and provision of GWV scholarships at Victorian universities.
