Following more than five years on staff at the Los Angeles Times, I was named a contributing writer to MAMM: Women, Cancer and Community, covering developments in breast and gynecological cancers, and contributed stories to O, The Oprah Magazine, Los Angeles magazine and USC Health, in addition to the Web site of the Association of Health Care Journalists. I also contributed a narrated feature story on Fever of Unknown Origin to American Public Media's Weekend America program and was interviewed for NPR's "On Point" program. In 2004, I became a consultant to the California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships at the Annenberg School for Communication at USC, designing and organizing workshops to train mid-career journalists in covering multicultural health issues, health care disparities and health policy, and recruiting doctors, policy experts and award-winning journalists as faculty.

Developed, wrote and reported weekly news and feature stories, with emphasis on aging, nutrition, obesity, Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular health, diabetes, plastic surgery and health care access. Produced weekly Capsules column on research advances in medical and biological sciences, nutrition and fitness. Broke news of nation's first outbreak of highly resistant staph infections among gay men in 2003.

Responsible for national and regional science and medical coverage. Wrote consumer-focused features on deaths and complications from cosmetic surgery. Reported on developments in seismology, environmental science and unmanned space exploration. Analyzed the role of DNA testing in the O.J. Simpson trial and the impact of AIDS on superstar athletes.
