This process happens on an ongoing basis using data we collect from our programs, and the feedback we receive from our staff. I develop program materials for the programs as well as market the program locally to the community. Our team also collaborates with community stakeholders regarding programs and capacity building recreation services.

Working as a leader in the outdoors, I provide opportunities for children and youth to experience a variety of outdoor education skills including Wilderness Survival skills, Cycling, Canoeing, Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoeing, and more. This also includes equipment maintenance, and acting as a mentor to new staff.

My role as the Summer Day Camp Coordinator included preparing all of the program pieces involved in a group of outdoor based summer camps. This includes field trips, scheduling staff and managing volunteers. Hiring, training, mentoring, and evaluating a staff team, and planning in-services and managing equipment for the camps to run smoothly.

Pattaya, Thailand

As a volunteer participant for the University of Alberta’s Play Around the World Program, I have learned about the importance of free play, play theory, and global citizenship. I was fortunate to be given an opportunity to put this acquired knowledge into practice when I was placed in Pattaya, Thailand for four months. There, I worked with underprivileged children and youth in schools, orphanages and welfare centres, with the objective of creating and programming sustainable play and recreation opportunities.

In the summer time I take groups of children on multi-day trips down the north saskatchewan river, or hiking in the mountains.
