Working on the implementation of a new platform for apprenticeships which brings providers, employers and apprentices together in a single system: from registration to certification. Involves collaborating with internal and external customers to deliver end-point assessments with multiple training providers and across multiple standards.

The post is customer facing and involves using change management tools and techniques to manage the people side of changes to IT systems to achieve the required business outcome. This is predominantly with Cerner Millennium, the trust’s Patient Administration System (PAS) and Electronic Patient Record (EPR). Other downstream systems that support patient care and staff welfare are also in the IT portfolio. The change can be enforced: implementing national or local statutory requirements or voluntary: customisation of local systems, adoption of new systems. Project values range from £5000 to several £m.

Following on from the previous project, the brief was to utilise the knowledge acquired of HRG4 to identify, understand and fix data quality problems arising from Cerner Millennium that were contributing to a loss of income to the Transplantation and Immunology Division. This required working closely with operational management and medical coding, finance, contracts, information services and Cerner back office.

The project brief was to improve completeness & depth of medical coding, to improve quality of discharge summary, to understand the impact of HRG4 on medical coding and to demonstrate increased revenue (actual & potential). Improved completeness of coding leading to 26% increase in recorded activity in a surgical speciality and correction of admission process leading to £400K increase in income per annum for a medical speciality.

Reviewing the use of all diagnostic procedures and tests within the transplantation division with the aim of identifying efficiencies that would lead to reduced costs and less wastage.

Post secured by competitive interview after a Trust reorganisation. The enlarged Unit consisted of 5 clinical specialties (Metabolic Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Genetics & Adolescent Medicine) and 2 laboratories (Molecular Genetics & Cytogenetics). Responsible to the Clinical Unit Chair (a joint appointment) and accountable to the Director of Clinical Operations, the post involved working closely with the 2 Chairs and the Modern Matron. The Modern Matron reported to the Clinical Unit Manager (CUM) and the management team was supported by a Business Manager (Band 7) and a PA/secretary who also reporting directly to CUM.

My experience of healthcare management in an academic environment gave me a different but useful outlook on how to manage a service within the NHS and I saw this post as an opportunity to use those skills. The Unit consisted of Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Metabolic & Adolescent Medicine (GEMA). The post reported to the Clinical Unit Lead and was accountable to the Divisional Manager.
