About Jane Alexander
Educational leader, teacher and mentor, with over 20 years of experience in higher education. During the past decade at CSI/CUNY, I oversaw the writing, approval and introduction of two new B.S. programs that launched in 2016 - a B.S. in Earth and Environmental Science and a B.S. in Earth Science for educators in grades 7 - 12. These programs now serve over 50 undergraduate students from a diverse range of backgrounds. I coordinated these programs, along with the Geology minor, until January 2023.I am currently building my research program having switched to a research focused position in 2021 after spending over a decade in a predominantly teaching and administrative role. Research interests are primarily related to the geochemistry and provenance of sediments and sedimentary rocks in active tectonic settings (including geochemistry of accretionary wedge sediments and pore fluids, and geochemistry of sedimentary rocks in the Newark Basin, NJ). Other projects are related to more recent sedimentary processes and geomorphology, including, Staten Island beach morphology and processes, and a study of the origin and age of fluvioglacial sediments on Staten Island. Many of these projects involve undergraduate student researchers. A small group of graduate students are currently working with me to map the distribution of microplastic on the shoreline of Staten Island.
Listed skills include Geology, Geochemistry, Geological Mapping, Teaching, and 22 others.
