Presenter/Host
CurrentI've presented a wide variety of live news and current affairs magazine radio programmes including BBC Radio 4's Sunday, Woman's Hour, The World Tonight, Last Word, Americana, and BBC World Service's Reporting Religion, and Heart and Soul. I also chair discussions at academic, policy and private events. I write, produce, and present documentaries and podcasts for the BBC and independent outlets, usually on Religion, and I serve as a frequent commentator on US Religion and Politics for BBC news programs.
Broadcast Journalist
Current
Bbc Washington Correspondent
This was my second stint in the BBC Washington Bureau. I reported for TV and radio and wrote for BBC online, covering breaking news, doing live on air analysis of political, diplomatic & cultural events. I also wrote, reported, and produced short and long format features.
Program Maker
CurrentI've researched, produced and presented dozens of radio docs over the years. Among them, I produced and presented radio series Fork in the Road for the BBC World Service which explores the spiritual choices people have made when confronted by tough life events. I made a documentary on the organized religious resistance to the white supremacists who descended on Charlottesville, my current home town. Before that I produced one for the BBC on Obama's secret drone program, Remote Control War. It won the silver award at the New York Radio Festival. And the BBC programme, Good Without God which I presented and produced won Interviewer of the Year at the UK's Sandford St Martin Awards. The most personal documentary, for BBC Radio 4, was on the chemical soup we are living in and its connections to our multiple chronic health challenges. It's called Allergic to The 21st Century. I plan to make a sequel given the mass of new evidence emerging on why so many are getting sick and what we can do about it.
Public Speaker
CurrentI give speeches and talks at universities and in public forums on religion and the media, chair debates and seminars on a wide variety of subjects, and do voice over work.
Partnership Editor
I was part of a one-year project to raise the coverage of women, particularly in the developing world. I developed partnerships with other organizations (including but not exclusively media outlets), to find and develop stories for the international news program, The World (then a partnership from PRI, WGBH Boston, and the BBC). We looked at health - reproductive rights, childbirth, sanitation - access to power, the impact of climate change - all sorts of ways in which the treatment of and status of women is connected to the health and wellbeing of the wider society.
Radio Presenter
I love making programmes for the UK-based podcast, Things Unseen. Hear my interviews below with Integrative Medicine pioneer, Dr Andrew Weil, and Cherokee Medicine Man, CJ Whitedeer.
Religion Editor
I created the role of Religion Editor, which involved commissioning stories, producing linked series of features, editing scripts and audio, as well as on air analysis of religion news stories
Religion Correspondent
I created the role of Religious Affairs Correspondent. I wrote, reported, produced, and edited short and long format religion stories including many documentaries from around the world. I led the live coverage of major news events including the death of Pope John Paul the Second and the election of Benedict. I worked on global stories where religion and politics intersected and reported frequently on US politics and Religion
