About Jane Luu
I am an astronomer and engineer. In astronomy, I have long been interested in what the small bodies of our solar system -- Kuiper Belt objects, comets, asteroids -- can tell us about how the solar system formed. Of particular interest is the interstellar object ’Oumuamua, our first visitor from another planetary system – and how to prepare for the next interstellar visitor. In engineering, my areas of expertise are laser radar (lidar/ladar) systems, and remote sensing instrumentation. Recent work includes building a 5m-optical path Fourier Transform spectrometer for wind lidar, and designing a ground-based laser radar system for planetary astronomy.
Listed skills include Observational Astronomy, 3D Lidar, Lidar, Fourier Transform Spectrometer, and 15 others.

Technical Staff
Spaceborne wind lidar, 2013-2014, co-principal investigator. Built a prototype Fourier transform spectrometer to measure wind profiles. The spectrometer uses a highly folded optical design and a photon counting detector for very high sensitivity.Ground-based lidar for planetary astronomy, 2013, principal investigator. Proposed concept of ground-based laser radar system for observations of asteroids and planets, as response to NASA's Asteroid Grand Challenge. The ground-based lidar would complement radar observations of near-Earth asteroids, and is capable of reaching objects beyond the near-Earth region.Digital focal plane array lidar, 2012, engineer. Tested and calibrated a digital focal plane array used as detector in a heterodyne lidar system to measure target's velocity.Airborne chemical sensor, 2011 - 2012, engineer. Designed and built test system to calibrate airborne chemical sensor. Terahertz spectroscopy, 2008 - 2011, engineer. Performed terahertz spectroscopy experiments to calibrate terahertz spectrometer. Assisted in building and aligning terahertz spectrometer.Low-altitude airborne lidar, 2008, co-principal investigator. Designed and built laser radar system for low-altitude operation.Shadow Imaging, 2007-2008, co-principal investigator. This technique measures the 2D "shadow" (diffraction pattern) cast by an object passing in front of a star. Carried out experiments and simulations.Range-Doppler Lidar, 2004-2008, engineer. Built a 3D lidar system capable of both ranging and Doppler measurements, using photon counting detectors. Tested and validated system.Technical Consulting for GOES satellites 2001-2004. Provided technical oversight for implementation of GOES particle sensors.
