I am a family sociologist, with many years experience of undertaking primarily qualitative research on people's everyday family lives, with a particular focus on children and young people. I am particularly interested in how people make sense of 'family' in their lives, and in how childhood and family are often idealised in ways that perhaps undermine children's and adults' capacities to cope with 'normal' family troubles. In collaboration with colleagues, I have particularly focused on family troubles and troubling families, with a special interest in death and its continuing aftermath in the lives and relationships of the living. I am concerned with these issues in both the UK and Majority worlds, having been engaged in research in Senegal and in China. My primary focus in recent years is particularly on bereavement services and 'bereavement' studies from the perspectives of racially minoritized populations, asking the questions, Do we need to decolonise bereavement studies, and how can bereavement services respond?
