These include domestic violence, sexual assault, crime related incidents, issues with drugs / alcohol, falling out with friends / housemates, pregnancy, taking time out of studies, case consultations, bullying, housing related problems etc. As a Welfare Adviser, I aim to solve problems and guide students through solutions making use of both internal departments and external agencies.Developing relationships with outside agencies as well as relevant internal departments is key to my role. I have the ability to maintain good boundaries and aim to empower the student to navigate the problem themselves. Often being presented with high risk to students' personal safety, I manage this risk and escalate it as appropriate to senior management by communicating with all involved especially if there is change to this risk. I act as a mediator with the aim of educating students on key communication skills to overcome disputes within their housing situation or amongst other students.I have written and delivered training on responding to disclosures of sexual violence to the student and staff community at York St John. I write and review web pages and develop promotional material as well as help in the reviewing of relevant policies. Playing an active part in relevant community forums including night time economy and river safety which directly relate to student safety in York. I collate relevant information from these meetings which then informs the campaigns and events I manage and run in any one academic year. I project manage these campaigns from beginning to end.
