About Jane Thompson

Jane Thompson brings together more than two decades of site experience with international-level research, policy work and capacity development initiatives in the cultural heritage sector. She has fulfilled significant institutional positions, including membership of the highest advisory body for cultural heritage for the respective ministries of Italy and Romania, and is Course Director for Heritage Management at the Bocconi University.Co-author of the UNESCO 2013 resource manual Managing Cultural World Heritage and 2011 World Heritage Capacity Building Strategy as part of her work for ICCROM, she also helped draft the Policy for the Integration of a Sustainable Development Perspective into the Processes of the World Heritage Convention adopted in 2015. Currently, she is in the core ICCROM-IUCN team delivering the capacity-building platform of the recently launched World Heritage Leadership Programme and the new UNESCO management manual for World Heritage.As well as her ongoing role leading the Herculaneum Conservation Project on behalf of the Italian arm of the Packard Humanities Institute, she consults for World Heritage properties worldwide with a particular emphasis on management improvements and heritage impact assessments.

    The senior manager overseeing this long-term public-private programme for the conservation and enhancement of the Roman city of Herculaneum (www.herculaneum.org) on behalf of the private partners since 2009, having already responsible for its implementation in the role of project manager since 2001. It unites a philanthropic foundation, the Packard Humanities Institute (also via its Italian arm, the Istituto Packard per i Beni Culturali) with the local heritage authority, currently the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum. For a ten year period the partnership also included a research institute The British School at Rome.Working with the project partners, she has been responsible for all management (funding; financial and contractual management; interdisciplinary team, interface with all partners); strategic development with an advisory board and partner representatives; setting new standards for the conservation and management of cultural heritage sites; and capacity building in partnership (e.g. ICCROM, GCI, universities, regional/national authorities and other NGOs).To date €25+ million have been committed and Jane has ensured that this has translated into effective, good-value approaches that are potentially re-applicable in other sites. The scope of activities in Herculaneum has extended to include planning for future museum and research facilities and improving the interface with the adjacent modern town. Recognition was gained in 2012 from UNESCO’s Director General who identified Herculaneum as a model project for the conservation and management of sites worldwide.

The evaluation focussed on how the changes in Galle Harbour, the natural harbour formed by the bay to the south-east of Galle, foreseen by the March 2014 design proposals for port upgrading and sea breakwaters would impact on the World Heritage property of the ‘Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications’. The report concluded with recommendations that were submitted to and approved by the World Heritage Committee in its 2016 session (Decision 40 COM 7B.47).
