About Jane De Leon Griffin

Originally from Catalina Island, California, Jane earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Comparative Literature from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (2000), a Master’s Degree in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Irvine (2005) and Doctorate of Philosophy in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Irvine (2009). A cultural studies scholar, Jane’s academic research focuses on artisanal and craft cultural production, popular and mass culture, literary culture and gender studies in Latin America, specifically Chile. She is author of _The Labor of Literature: Democracy and Literary Culture in Modern Chile_ (University of Massachusetts Press, 2016), two co-authored books in translation and multiple academic articles. As a university administrator, Jane works to integrate the arts and sciences into an undergraduate business education, increase equity and access to all university stakeholders and place students at the center of the educational enterprise. As a community arts organizer, Jane founded the non-profit organization Inspired Masses, which brings free literary and writing activities to the greater Boston area. Specifically, Inspired Masses partners with the Chilean non-profit Plagio Fundación, the City of Boston's Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture, the Boston Public Library and WERS Radio 88.9FM to produce the annual flash fiction writing contest, "Boston in 100 Words." As a pedagogue, Jane teaches elementary, intermediate and advanced Spanish language classes and advanced literature, cinema and culture courses in Spanish. Jane is also a mom, wife, cook, crafter, animal lover, outdoor enthusiast and live music addict.
