Zoos Victoria operates Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary. There are over 600 employees, including a large pool of casual employees. The types of positions at Zoos Victoria are wide and varied, some unique (i.e. animal keepers), some commonplace to most organizations i.e. marketing, finance, IT, and everything in between (i.e. teachers, gardeners, trades, customer service). The HR team is responsible for all aspects of Human Resources, operating in Centres of Excellence – Talent Acquisition, Health & Safety, Organisational Development, Employee Relations and HR Operations.

I was part of the Human Resources team for ABC Victoria and Tasmania. The HR function was responsible for OH&S, employee relations, and performance management. Recruitment, training and development and payroll were operated by centralized departments, with state based HR teams liaising closely with these units.
