I have been collaborating with other students to collect data for the avocado rootstock trials currently being conducted at Cal Poly. Throughout this project we are collecting data on 390+ avocado trees that were planted July 2020. Through this research project, the Crop Science Department and the California Avocado Commission is looking to determine the best avocado rootstock to prevent root rot infections caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi. The data that I have been collecting is trunk diameter above and below the graft union, height, and scoring trees on over all health, heat damage, salinity, blooming, and flush. This project has been a great introduction to me on how to properly set up a research experiment and conducting data collection.

I have been working for C & M Nursery in Nipomo, California, as a production assistant durning the summers of 2016, 2017, and 2020.Most recently, I worked with the orchard managers to create an irrigation manual that outlined how the irrigation system is currently being run on all 3 ranches. I also used google maps to create a digital map of each orchard that includes roads, buildings, blocks, valves, and all irrigation lines. In between projects I have been responsible for completing various management tasks. I have experience using a skid steer with multiple attachments. I focussed a lot on pest management; operating the spray wig to kill weeds, spreading snail and earwig bait around newly planted trees, and maintaining bait stations with PCQ to reduce ground squirrel populations. I also have some experience grafting lemon and avocado trees in the nursery.

I was an Operations Intern at Mission Produce from June to September 2019. I spent my time during my internship working on various projects inside their packing house.I had 4 main projects that I completed during my internship. I worked with the other Operations intern to create a training manual for the bagging machine and together we used AS400 to track forklift running hours and pallet placements. I worked on time trails where I used excel to calculate the bags per minute on the bagging machine. The results from these trails were used to update their daily schedule. Over the course of the internship, another intern and I collaborated on the Field to Fork Project and create a 60 page book that explained the growing and production process of getting avocados from the farm fields and out to consumers.I also got a lot of experience working on various parts of the production line such as packing fruit, glueing boxes, and locating pallets within the packing house.
