About Jane Friedman
I've spent more than 25 years in the publishing industry as an editor, publisher, and consultant. From 1998–2010, I worked at F+W Media, where I ultimately became publisher of Writer's Digest, a $10-million multimedia brand. Afterward, I worked briefly for the Virginia Quarterly Review at UVA, where I led a strategic overhaul of its website and launched digital subscriptions. My current focus is The Hot Sheet, a paid newsletter serving professional authors and the broader publishing community, established in 2015. It was awarded Media Outlet of the Year in 2020 by Digital Book World.I'm the author of THE BUSINESS OF BEING A WRITER (The University of Chicago Press, 2018), which received a starred review from Library Journal. I'm a regular contributor to Writer's Digest, and, in collaboration with The Authors Guild, I wrote The Authors Guild Guide to Self-Publishing. I've been speaking at writing and publishing conferences since 2001, and have delivered keynote addresses at the San Miguel Writers Conference, The Muse & The Marketplace, the San Francisco Writers Conference, and the Stockholm Writers Festival. My expertise on the transformation of the publishing industry has been featured throughout many events and media, including NPR's Morning Edition, The New York Times, Frankfurt Book Fair, Publishers Weekly, SXSW, Nieman Journalism Lab, and AWP. I've also served on panels and advisory boards for nonprofits such as the National Endowment for the Arts and the Creative Work Fund.People who work with me say that I possess remarkable vision for the organizations I work for; I enjoy questioning the status quo and focus on the long-term impact of the initiatives I undertake. I'm known for developing valuable content and experiences across multiple platforms, using new tools and technologies to grow audiences, and building communities around special-interest areas. I also have 10+ years of experience in nonfiction acquisitions and editing, contract negotiation, and publications management.
