Assess and prepare patients for surgery, including pre-op teaching and IV insertion. Provide emotional support to patients and their families. Assess and prepare patients for GI procedures including Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, ERCP, Bronchoscopy and Thoracentesis. Care for these patients in the post-op phase is also included, as well as preparing patients and their families for discharge. I also assist in the OR during GI procedures

Responsibilities include caring for 2 or 3 critical care patients including patients with IABP, ventilators, arterial lines, transvenous pacemakers and swan-ganz catheters. These patients were usually on numerous IV drips. Duties also included charge nurse, preceptor, and instructor in the critical care course. I maintained my CCRN while working on this unit. Daily use of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the patient was especially important for positive patient outcomes.

As a new graduate nurse, I developed my organizational skills in caring for 5 or 6 patients per shift. I functioned as the charge nurse when needed and developed my skills when working with patients, families and co-workers. I learned to become an integral member of the health care team.
