As an editor for the official travel magazine of Texas, I conceptualized stories to promote Texas tourism and told the compelling stories of its people, places, and wide open spaces.

I was a founding editor for this regional luxury lifestyle magazine, which celebrated Austin’s arts, fashion, fine dining, real estate, and events. I established a roster of highly sought-after writers and worked closely with the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher to build our reputation from scratch. I also had fun — I interviewed local thought-leaders and figureheads and was lucky enough to cover a number of high-profile events, such as SXSW, ACL, Formula 1, Austin Food & Wine Festival, and red-carpet premieres.Austin Way was a subsidiary of Niche Media, the country’s preeminent publisher of regional lifestyle magazines, which are mailed to select high-income households and distributed at cultural centers, high-end retail, local boutiques, hotels, and high-profile events. The company publishes 14 city magazines with a combined annual distribution of 19 million copies nationally.

I learned a lot about running a side hustle during the formative years of my career. I primarily designed visual identities, websites, invitations and print collateral for various clients and companies. My clients included a book publisher, a fashion executive, an e-commerce store for a clothing line, an e-commerce store for a high-end jewelry designer, and a nanny placement company.

Wrote and edited stories for THR.com during weekend shifts. Optimized traffic to the site by utilizing SEO keywords in article headlines, subheads and site placement. Edited domestic, international and wire stories using AP style. Packaged news, exclusives and reviews with images, videos and related links in our CMS (Drupal). Assisted copy and research team with other national titles when overloaded. Built company style manual with copy/research manager. Advised online and event marketing teams for SEO headline writing and e-mail marketing.

Served as liaison between the sales and edit teams to ensure awareness of client objectives and editorial opportunities in 10 luxury city magazines and websites, including Gotham, Hamptons, Ocean Drive, Boston Common, Capitol File, Philadelphia Style, LA Confidential, and Vegas magazines. Worked with Niche Media founder to manage event coverage for all markets.Appointed by VP of editorial operations to act as digital market manager; managed advertising schedules for all websites and e-newsletters; evaluated our subscriber database, open rates and click-through rates for e-mail blasts using Exact Target.Niche Media targets individuals with household incomes in excess of $200,000 and who maintain liquid assets of more than $750,000. With 14 markets and 9,200 distribution points around the country, more than 4.5 million magazines are delivered annually.

Assisted several managing editors and EICs based nationwide out of the New York office. Promoted from editorial intern to a full-time freelance editorial assistant for Hamptons magazine; acted as direct support for managing editor and EIC of Gotham and Hamptons magazines. Wrote and edited several stories for various sections including event and entertainment coverage, real estate, dining, and travel; built strong relationships with PR to develop stories and schedule interviews.Assisted editorial business manager on an as-needed basis. Managed incoming invoices for writers and photographers; created payment vouchers; contacted vendors for missing invoices; analyzed monthly runlists and outline monthly budget reconciliations.

Award-winning quarterly print and online magazine. Recruited professional freelance writers abroad to cover issues international journalists face and the state of press freedom. Edited stories on topics such as journalist access into the Gaza Strip, dangers to Russia’s political journalists and Machu Picchu’s deterioration as a result of media-driven tourism.

Interviewed gymnasts after competitions in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China; submitted quotes on a 10-minute deadline to an online database. Quotes were used by Associated Press, The New York Times, Yahoo News and others. Wrote press conference highlights for American gymnasts, worked with translators to interview Italian, Spanish and German gymnasts.

Organized, updated and edited 500-page Volt Program Manual. Interviewed several managers; updated contractor performance data through correspondence with Houston program manager.
